Zen Word For Better Communication #20 八風吹不動 Happu-fukedomo-dohzezu

Let us have a heart that is unmoved by whatever wind blows.

In life, one faces the eight winds.  The eight winds are the following eight things that tend to shake people’s hearts; Profit, Decline, Backbiting, Honor, Praise, Abuse, Suffering and Pleasure.

If the winds are favorable, they are happy, and if they are unfavorable, they are depressed or angry.  It is natural and unstoppable for the mind to react in same way.  If you are happy, you should feel happy and if you are frustrated, you should feel frustrated.

The important thing is not to drag out the sensation you are feeling.  Even if the winds are favorable, don’t stay elated all the time.  Don’t stay depressed all the time, even in adverse circumstances.

Let your shaken heart immediately come back to real yourself, the center point of your heart.

In any company, it is important for leaders to provide firm guidance and support so that team members are not affected by external pressures and stresses.  The leader’s own attitude of “Happu-fukedomo-dohzesu” can enhance the stability of the entire team.  -K.Kato
